Varsity Centre unveiled

The Faculty of Physical Education and Health held two open house events last Friday and Saturday to celebrate the latest milestones at the new Varsity centre.

Hundreds of curious U of T staff, students, friends and neighbours braved the bone-chilling temperatures to try out the golf range, and see some action on the field and get a feel for the new turf.

“It was terrific seeing so many people at the open houses, and the excitement they showed when they first entered,” Dean Bruce Kidd observed.

Friday’s highlights under the dome included a noon-hour tee-off with President David Naylor and alumnae Helen Gurney. Guests looked on as the women’s Varsity soccer team practiced on the new turf. An ultimate Frisbee club tried their skills as well, while a few members of the Varsity dance squad demonstrated their jumps and flips on the new surface.

The dome was open again to the public on Saturday. Younger guests had a blast trying out the world-class facilities, with track and field, soccer and Frisbee stations set up by the Camp U of T staff.

Demonstrations on the field included an intramural soccer game, another performance from the dancing squad and an appearance by our very own “True Blue” mascot.

Guests got some extra warmth from the steaming cups of coffee, tea and hot chocolate generously donated by Tim Horton’s at Bloor and Bedford.

Overall, both events were successful celebrations of the beginning of a whole new ballgame in the world of sports and athletics for everyone here at University of Toronto.

“I hope that everyone in the U of T community feels welcome and proud of this latest addition to our campus,” says Kidd.
